The Best Thing About Christmas Morning
Christmas has always been Jared's favorite. He was one of those obnoxious kids who woke up at four a.m. and went into his parents' room every fifteen minutes until they grudgingly got up around seven. As he got older, he still woke up at four, but managed to entertain himself reading or watching TV until the rest of the house deigned to get up.
There isn't anything about Christmas morning Jared doesn't love. He loves the lights and stuffed stockings and the packages sitting prettily under the tree, the breakfast of coffee cake and cinnamon rolls, opening his gifts and watching everyone else open theirs. He loves the anticipation and the joy and the laughter and the silly Christmas pajamas his mom still gets him every year.
This year, more than anything, he loves that Jensen is at his parents' house with him. He still wakes up at four, of course, buzzing with excitement.
"Time," Jensen mumbles when Jared slides back into bed after going to the bathroom.
"It's a little after four," Jared whispers.
Jensen then makes a noise to convey the deep and utter disdain he has for all hours in the morning that exist before nine. Even half-asleep, he's very eloquent with his grunts.
"I think Santa's been here." Jared can't help his Christmas morning excitement. It's hardwired into his DNA. But he hasn't peeked at the tree, didn't even peek as a kid because that was cheating and it ruined the surprise.
"No. Not yet." Jensen makes another grumpy noise and smooshes his face against the pillow as he turns toward Jared, his eyes still closed. "He's doin' the Midwest now."
Jared tickles his fingertips up Jensen's arm and over his shoulder, smiling when Jensen scrunches up his nose in annoyance. "How do you know that?"
"Wrote him and got his schedule. Told him to save us for later 'cause we'd be sleeping in."
Jensen's words are mumbled and slurred, and Jared thinks it's possibly the cutest thing in the world that Jensen is so annoyed, but willing to play along because he knows how much Jared enjoys all the holiday trappings. Jared is utterly charmed.
"Go back to sleep," he says as he rubs his hand down Jensen's back. The order turns out to be unnecessary—Jensen's already gone.
Of course, Jared is wide awake, with no chance of falling asleep any time soon. But Jensen is snuggled up against him, and he can see the neighbor's Christmas lights through the cracks in the blinds. The room is peaceful, quiet save for the soft sound of Jensen's breathing, and Jared is okay with staying in bed for a few more hours. He thinks he might have a new favorite thing about Christmas.
